Georgia claims one of the oldest continuous winemaking traditions in the world, built around qvevri - large clay vessels buried underground for fermentation - a method that predates most of what's considered "natural wine" elsewhere by thousands of years.
That history, combined with a currency that stretches further than almost anywhere else producing genuinely serious wine, is why this region keeps showing up on our radar.
Kakheti: The Heart of the Wine Region
Roughly two hours east of Tbilisi, Kakheti holds the highest concentration of family-run wineries in the country, many offering tastings directly in a farmhouse courtyard rather than a formal tasting room.

Tbilisi's Old Town
Tbilisi itself splits neatly into a walkable old town of sulfur bathhouses and balconied streets, and a newer district with a genuinely good, low-cost natural wine bar scene worth an evening or two before heading out to Kakheti.
Kazbegi: The Mountain Detour
A few hours north of Tbilisi, Kazbegi offers some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in the Caucasus, anchored by the Gergeti Trinity Church perched above the valley. Worth combining with the wine region as bookends of a single loop rather than a separate trip.
The wine got us here, but the mountains are the part we keep thinking about since we left.

Many family wineries in Kakheti don't take online bookings - a quick call ahead or arranging through your guesthouse is the more reliable route than searching for a booking platform. Renting a car or hiring a driver for the day is the most practical way to visit several wineries without a rigid tour schedule.
September to October coincides with the rtveli grape harvest, when many wineries open their courtyards for the actual pressing process.
Bring cash for smaller family wineries - card readers are inconsistent this far outside Tbilisi.
